Brazil is home to many holidays, events and celebrations. Of course there is the ever-famous Carnival but beyond this, Brazilians celebrate many other religious and patriotic events.
New Years Day in Brazil
Called Ano Nove in the native Portuguese or Revillon, this is one of the events in Brazil that celebrated throughout the country. The best place to be for this celebration is Rio de Janeiro where over 2 million people come together to celebrate the New Year. Copacabana is the place to be to see the best fireworks show and most incredible live music concerts.
Brazil's World Famous Carnival
Carnival is one of the most spectacular events in Brazil. Known throughout the world, Carnival in Rio de Janeiro runs for 5 days with the last day of celebration on Shrove Tuesday. All 5 days of the Carnival are considered public holidays so most shops are closed.
Some of the other events celebrated in Brazil include Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Labor Day and Independence Day are national instead of religious holiday. Of course Christmas is another major holiday in a country where the majority of residents are Roman Catholic.
Concerts in Brazil are Amazing
Aside from religious and patriotic events concerts in Brazil are quite common and very popular. Brazil hosts a myriad of musical entertainment. From famous North American rock stars to the classical sounds of symphony orchestras, there is music enough for all ages and tastes. Most of the larger concerts take place in the major cities of Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro. In addition Brazil is a rhythmic nation and there are always local bands playing both traditional and modern music in the neighborhood bars and nightclubs.
Theatre in Brazil
Theater is flourishing in Brazil. In Rio comedic theater is all the rage and shows play to capacity crowds nightly. Sao Paolo has more than 150 plays and shows occurring at any one time. Many of these dramas focus on, and are made for, children. There is also an annual theater festival located in Curitiba that lasts for about 10 days. Local playwrights and artists are able to display their works.
Soccer (Football) and other Sports
While there are many popular sports in Brazil, nothing garners more excitement amongst the locals than a football game. The Brazilian National football team is known for its talented athletes. Their games are popular with people from around the world. Many of the team members become national or world celebrities on par with movie or rock starts. A visit to Brazil is not complete without spending a sunny afternoon watching the local football game and cheering the hometown on to victory.
Brazil is also known for its martial arts. Capoeira is quite popular amongst the locals. This Afro-Brazilian technique is known for its rather acrobatic moves. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, developed in 1910, is a fighting martial art that focuses on chokeholds and immobilizing holds. Vale Tudo is a form of fighting that combines all disciplines and is popular with “ultimate fighter” events.
Other popular sports in Brazil include tennis and basketball. Formula One racing is also well liked in Brazil having produced three Formula One champions. Indy Car racing, stock car racing and cross-country races are also becoming quite popular.
