Vaccinations in Brazil

Before traveling to Brazil it is important to remember that it is a primarily tropical country and hence necessary precautions should be taken.

Threat of malaria in Brazil

One of the biggest health threats in Brazil is Malaria. This is more so in the western and northern parts of Brazil. There is no such vaccination against the disease. You can always take prophylaxis with medicines like Lariam, Malarone or Doxycycline. Transmission of the disease is greatest in the remote areas where mining, lumbering and agriculture is the mainstay of the economy.

Recommended Brazil vaccinations

The first and foremost Brazil vaccination is Hepatitis A. This is mainly applicable for those people who eat in restaurants a lot. Also advisable is the vaccination against Typhoid, which is a must before traveling to Brazil. Vaccine against yellow fever is also a must, but it’s applicable only for those areas where the disease is prevalent. Hepatitis B vaccination is also strongly recommended before traveling to Brazil. Apart from this, Rabies and Tetanus vaccines are recommended for those people who plan to travel in the wilderness.

Medications that you should carry

Travelers' diarrhea is the most common travel-related ailment that people suffer from. Carry antibiotics and anti-diarrheal drugs along with you and start medication promptly at the very first signs of the disease. Also carry general drugs like anti inflammatory, anti pyretics, anti histaminic, and anti emetics along with you. These are mostly drugs sold ‘over the counter’ and should be available in all major cities of the country. But to be on the safer side, do carry your own medications. Different countries sell medicines under different trade names. This can lead to a lot of confusion, and hence it is good to carry the bare necessities along with yourself, when you travel to Brazil. Also carry a prescription for all the medications that you carry. You may otherwise face problems with the custom checks at the airport. It is highly recommended that you see your doctor before you travel, and have the contact number of your doctor handy at all times, when you are in Brazil.
