Sao Paulo is the largest city of Brazil. It also ranks fourth in the largest urban areas in the world. It is also the most populous city of Brazil and is the capital of the state of Sao Paulo. Considered the richest city in terms of commerce and finance, Sao Paulo, in Portuguese, stands for Saint Paul.

A Brief History

Sao Paulo Brazil was founded in the year 1554 by two Jesuit missionaries Manuel de Nobrega and Jose de Anchita. It was officially declared as a city in the year 1711. An abolishment from slavery led to an influx of immigrants from Portugal, Spain, Italy and Germany. The reason why people came from all across Europe was to work at the coffee plantations. In the latter half of the 20th century, numerous Japanese, Syrian and Lebanese immigrants arrived in the city including Italians. They all wished to turn into industrialists. The city is home to various international banks, law firms and multinational and consumer centric companies.

All major Brazilian languages are spoken in Sao Paulo, but Portuguese is by far the most popular of all. Apart from this, various Asian languages are also spoken along with Japanese and Italian. The March Of Jesus at Corpus Christi takes place each year in Zona Norte. Organized by the “Rebirth Church”, it draws over a million visitors on an annual basis. The Electronic Language International festival which showcases web art, net art, hypertext and computer animation is also a major tourist attraction.
